Barrister Dan Elekwachi, a prolific lawyer with over thirty years of experience and Coordinator, South East, of the League of Patriotic Youths has hailed Ola Olukayode for introducing a human face to the commissions’ operations.
Barrister Dan Elekawchi, Coordinator, South East, League of Patriotic Youths has called for more support and strengthening of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Barrister Elekwachi made this declaration in a press statement issued today, in his Lagos office and made available to the media.
Elekwachi noted that since the appointment of Olu Olukayode as the commission’s boss, he has drastically changed the hitherto disgusting image of the commission before the eyes of the public and has now established a human face. “The reputation of the commission was nowhere to be written before now, but you can see the changes”, he stated.,
The lawyer observed that unlike the previous Gestapo-style regime put in place where victims were presumed guilty, arrested, detained, interrogated, and made a public show, that attitudinal pattern has long been jettisoned. “That was the first casualty of this new chairman; anyone arrested now stand the chance of returning home after questioning”, he disclosed, calling praising the chairman for his robust approach to legality.
The South East Coordinator, of the League further observed that with limited resources, the EFCC has lived up to its billings taking on hitherto sacred cows and praised the leadership for not buckling up to pressure by its investigations and trials of highly placed individuals2 such as Olu Agunloye, Sadia Umar Farouk, Halima Shehu, Betta Edu, Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, Godwin Emefiele, Willie Obiano, Charles Ugwu amongst others. “These trials are ongoing without the necessary media euphoria as was the case before”, Barrister Elekwachi pointed out.
The Coordinator in calling for more support and funding further advised that the commission should not be jumbled with the failed system of the Police stressing that a gradual replacement in all the states is better and will produce appreciable results.
Turning to the youths and the prospects of protest, Elekwachi quoted Benjamin Disraeli as saying that “positive national existence is impossible without youth’s idealism and heroism and called on the authorities to implement measures that would improve youthful development in the country.
