The leaders of the Committee for the Defense of Democracy (CFDD) rose from their bi-annual meeting calling for sanctioning of the defecting PDP governors to the APC. The Committee, in a communique issued at the end of the meeting, regretted the gale of defections, calling it a complete betrayal of the trust reposed on them by the electorate. The communique signed by Comrade Humphrey Ejiogu and Raphael Udozor described the defectors as selfish, callous, and inhuman. They said what the country needs at this stage are visionary leaders capable of piloting the nation out of the doldrums. The communique noted that Industries are dwindling in Nigeria, factories are closing up and unemployment on the increase; yet elected governors are busy implementing selfish agendas beneficial only to them. The communique blasted them for being insensitive and shortsighted; it also frowned at the manner states are being run as if they are the personal fiefdom of the governors. “It is a big surprise that our elected governors lack ideas and innovations”, the communique stated. Recently, the Ebonyi State governor defected to the APC claiming that the South East has nothing to gain from remaining in the PDP. According to reports, governors Ben Ayade, Ifeanyi Ogwuanyi, and Willie Obiano are soon to follow. But the move according to the Rights Committee appears doomed because this is after all of them have served their two-term in office: It’s a wrong calculation because the Hausa Oligarchy will not hand over power to any of them”, the communique pointed out. “If it is to pave their way to the Senate, then they should be sanctioned for destroying the fabric of democracy which is the provision of amenities for the people”, the communique observed. At the moment, the call for restructuring has been on the front burner of discussion and the reason is not farfetched: key agitators believe that the country’s advancement would be achieved faster than the current pussyfooting and outdated zoning system. The communique called on the South East leaders to close ranks and be united in the pursuit of a common goal for the overall interest of the South East.
