Ambode: Assembly in Quandary as Denials Rent Probe Committee

Date:

The unpopular attempt by the Lagos State House of Assembly to indict former Governor Ambode of Lagos State has outrightly backfired.  Reason: a gale of denials and rebuttal has thrown spanner in the plans to implicate the former Governor in the purchase of the 820 buses for commuters.

Former Commissioners, Mr. Olusegun Banjo (Economic Planning and Budget), Mr. Olawale Oluwo (Energy and Mineral Resources) and Agriculture have all denied implicating Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, former Governor of Lagos State during their appearance in the committee sittings.

The men on Thursday refuted reports that they incriminated their former boss in the statements they made to the Committee.

The Assembly had claimed that Ambode did not get approval for the purchase of the buses and subsequently set up a probe Committee.

The Committee had summoned the former Commissioners and some other government officials to make statements on the project.

The Committee then resorted to media hype and even threatened to arrest Ambode, an action that did not go down well with Lagosians.

The move regarded as very unpopular from sundry quarters turned sympathy in favor of the former Lagos State Governor; Lagosians began to see the probe as a bobby trap as well as self-contrived and vindictive pursuit to give a dog a bad name.

Now the Lagos State House of Assembly is in total quandary and disarray over the matter since the tide of opinion has swung against them.

Fearing backlash, reports say the Honorable Members have begun to trade accusation and counter blames for their ill-fated gambit.

Insiders say the Assembly has subsequently broken into two-pro and anti Ambode with the pro-Ambode group rooting for a discontinuation of the probe.

They believe that Ambode is a card carrying member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as well as a much respected Nigerian whose performance has surpassed ordinary imagination.
